Milano Calibro 9: The Hours of Destiny

Milano Calibro 9: The Hours of Destiny

Documentary, by Deborah Farina, Italy, 2023.
Fifty years after the release of the cult noir "Milano Calibro 9" by director Fernando Di Leo, "Milano Calibro 9: The Hours of Destiny" wants to be an original tribute to this film that marked a turning point in Italian genre cinema, placing itself among the major reference productions for generations of filmmakers and critics at an international level. With the resumption of the 'topos' on which Di Leo structured the film, the centrality of the soundtrack composed by Luis Bacalov and Osanna, a real journey is made, which has as its destination the Milan of the past and that of the present, revealing how the ultimate meaning at the base of the film is the concept of destiny, for better or for worse. The docufilm develops through the original images of the film, which move, alternating and recalling those of a Milan of the early Seventies, between inserts of gangster fiction and music, the off-screen words from the “Dark Stories” by Giorgio Scerbanenco, the clippings of a cyclical time that returns and is fulfilled to recall the original title of the screenplay by Fernando Di Leo, “From Monday to Monday”. It is the voice of the film critic Davide Pulici, who transports us into the story, through the same words of Leo, with whom he spent the last years of his life. The hours of destiny, are those printed on the very first print of the 1972 film, then disappeared from the other prints and from distribution, considered by the author himself to be central to the conception of the story, which today see the light again thanks to the restoration of that first print, preserved at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia / Cineteca Nazionale in Rome, through the close collaboration of Cineteca Nazionale and Minerva Pictures.
